Benefits Choices

Your choices depend on whether you are classified as a full-time, regular part-time, part-time or flex-time employee. Please see the confirmation letter that you received from your recruiter to determine your position's category. You will have 31 days from the date of your hire date or date of qualifying event to enroll in or make changes to your benefits.

We understand choosing your benefits is an important decision. That’s why ALEX®, our interactive online tool, is available to help you select the best benefit plans for you and your family!

When you talk to ALEX, he'll ask you a few questions about life events, crunch some numbers and point out what makes the most sense for you. And anything you tell ALEX remains anonymous. • Disability benefits: Full-time and regular part-time employees also may purchase short-term and long-term disability insurance. These plans are administered by New York Life and replace a portion of your earnings if you are not able to work due to accident, illness or injury.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO): Full-time, regular part-time and part-time employees are eligible to accrue PTO. The rate you accrue PTO depends on the number of years you have worked for Carilion in a PTO-eligible status. You can use PTO for holidays, sick time and vacations.
  • Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs): These accounts help you save money on your taxes by allowing you to pay for eligible healthcare and childcare expenses with money deducted from your paycheck before taxes are taken out. If you participate in the dependent care FSA and contribute at least $10 per pay period, Carilion will contribute an additional $10 per pay period to your account. All employees are eligible for these benefits.
  • Retirement savings plan: All employees are eligible for our retirement savings plan, which can help you save for retirement. We offer a 403(b) plan for our not-for-profit companies and a 401(k) plan for our for-profit companies. You can contribute from 1 percent to 75 percent of your pay, up to Internal Revenue Service limits, in whole percent increments.
    • You will be enrolled automatically in the savings plan at 3 percent, with your savings rate increased by one percentage point each year, beginning the year after you are hired, until it reaches 10 percent. You can choose to opt-out of this benefit.
  • Pension plan: If you work for an eligible company, you also are eligible for our pension plan. This plan pays you a fixed benefit when you retire, based on factors such as age, earnings and years of service. Carilion makes all contributions to this plan--you don't have to contribute any of your own money.
  • Additional benefits: Some of the other benefits we offer to all our employees include educational benefits, subsidized childcare through HoneyTree Early Learning Centers, discounts to the Roanoke and Botetourt Carilion Wellness Centers, fitness facilities at some locations and an Employee Assistance Program that provides confidential counseling services.
