Step 5: Enroll in Benefits

Our benefits package offers you flexibility and choice. In this section, you'll learn more about your benefits so you can make informed choices when you enroll in your health, wellness and retirement benefits.

Detailed information about the benefits we offer and the cost of benefits is available on the Benefits Choices page.

You'll enroll in your benefits using an online program called My Total Access. Learn more on the How to Enroll page. You will have 31 days from the date of your hire date or date of qualifying event to enroll in or make changes to your benefits.

Paying for Your Benefits

If you enroll in our medical, dental, flexible spending accounts or retirement savings plan, your cost will be deducted from your paycheck before your income taxes are taken out. This lowers your taxable income.

If you are employed full-time, the deduction each pay period for your medical benefits will be based on your rate of pay. Regular part-time employees' rates are not tiered.

If you decide to cover your spouse or domestic partner under your medical plan, and they have access to employer sponsored group health coverage, you will pay a $50 premium each pay period. This premium is deducted pre-tax.  The working spouse premium applies to any spouse or domestic partner enrolled as a dependent in the Carilion Clinic medical plan unless one of the following applies:

  • Your spouse/domestic partner is not employed and does not have access to employer-sponsored group health coverage.
  • Your spouse/domestic partner is self-employed and does not have access to employer-sponsored group health coverage.
  • Your spouse/domestic partner is eligible for coverage in the Carilion Clinic medical plan as an employee, but you choose to cover both of you.
  • Your spouse/domestic partner is employed but the employer does not offer medical coverage, or your spouse/domestic partner is not eligible for coverage due to employment status or number of hours worked.

Your premium for supplemental life insurance is based on your age, so as your age increases to the next five-year age band, your premium will increase. Premiums for supplemental spouse life insurance are based on your spouse's age; as his age increases to the next five-year age band, the premium will increase. Premiums for supplemental children's life are based on the amount of coverage.

Premiums for disability coverage are based on your base annual salary and do not include shift differential or overtime in the calculation.

If you and your spouse are both employed by Carilion Clinic and are eligible for life insurance benefits, you may not carry spouse supplemental life on each other. Also, only one of you may carry children's supplemental life.

If you and your adult child under age 26 are both employed by Carilion and are eligible for life insurance benefits, you may not enroll your child in supplemental children's life insurance.
